Which tours to take

Cappadocia Red Tour vs Green Tour

The two classic routes, what each covers, and why most people do both.

Two routes, two halves of the region

Cappadocia's ground touring is built around two classic routes, universally known as the Red Tour and the Green Tour. Between them they cover the region's essential sights, split roughly by geography — the Red Tour handling the closer northern highlights and the Green Tour ranging further south. Understanding the difference is the key to planning your days around the balloon flight.

The Red Tour (North)

The Red Tour focuses on the sights closest to Göreme: the Open-Air Museum and its frescoed cave churches, the fairy-chimney valleys such as Love and Pasabag, scenic viewpoints, and the hilltop castle-town of Uçhisar. It's less driving and more concentrated sightseeing, making it a great first full day that puts the iconic Cappadocia scenery right in front of you.

The Green Tour (South)

The Green Tour covers more distance to reach the dramatic south: the deep Ihlara Valley with its riverside path and rock-cut churches, the Derinkuyu underground city, and the vast Selime Monastery. It's a longer day with more time in the vehicle, but it delivers some of the region's most jaw-dropping sights — the underground city especially — that the Red Tour doesn't reach.

Why do both

Because the two tours cover different sights with little overlap, most visitors who have the time do both — typically on separate days, often side by side with their balloon-flight morning. Together they give you the full picture: the cave churches and fairy chimneys of the north, and the valleys and underground cities of the south. Doing only one means missing half of what makes Cappadocia remarkable.

Fitting them around the flight

Because the balloon flight is fixed to dawn and weather-dependent, the ground tours are the flexible part of your itinerary. A common rhythm is to do a tour on your first full day, keep your balloon mornings open, and slot the second tour in around whichever dawn you fly. Planning the Red and Green tours as the movable pieces around the flight is how experienced visitors get the most out of a Cappadocia trip.
